All models of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console are compatible with non-HD televisions. (That “someone” is wrong!) You will notice a MAJOR difference upgrading from a PS2 to the PlayStation 3, even with a standard TV. Expect more detailed graphics (“photo-realistic” in some games), more complex in-game physics, more advanced Artificial Intelligence for enemy & ally computer-controlled characters, etc…
