Is The Nativity Scene Another Bit of Pop Culture?
I’m not prepared to say that the typical nativity scene is just another bit of Pop Culture. But I, personally, don’t see most of the characters in those sets in Bethlehem 2,000+ years ago. They’re either too cute or look more European/Caucasion than I do. Sure, I’m cute and all but I’ve never been asked if am from Isreal or any other Middle Eastern country for that matter. the point is, the nativity characters look more like the people buying them than the people they pretend to present. Is that a bad thing? Maybe. Maybe not. I’ve heard it said that the wise men, actually showed up a year or two later. I don’t know if that is Biblically acccurate since Matthew 2:8 says, “… he [Herod] sent them [the wise men] to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child . . .” Surely, Joseph and Mary didn’t stick around Bethlehem after the census was over? Their home was in Nazareth. The thing is, though, that the popular opinion is that the wise men did come at a later time, and yet
