Is the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) now mandatory? What does that mean in practice?
Yes. From 1 April 2009 all those appointed to their first headship in a maintained school or a non-maintained special school in England need to hold NPQH. This means that anyone applying for a headship post who has not graduated from NPQH cannot be appointed substantively, unless they are exempt from the regulations. Read guidance on the exemptions. Holding NPQH means that the applicant must have graduated from the NPQH programme and must have notification that they have been awarded NPQH. This can include the letter of notification from the National College, but does not need to be the NPQH certificate where this has been lost or has not yet been received.
