Is the National Liberal Leader Trying to Gain Political Points?
Governor-General Michaelle Jean has served Canada with warmth, distinction and dignity. Her five-year term will be coming to an end this fall. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has begun the search for a new governor-general. There is no fixed term for the governor-general. However, the traditional term for the Queen’s representative in Canada is five years. The former Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson served a sixth year. Georges Vanier held the office for seven and a half years. Until now, the search was kept private. In keeping with traditions, the prime minister sought views from Opposition leader Michael Ignatieff of the Liberals as well as NDP’s national leader Jack Layton and also the Gilles Duceppe, the Block leader.
