Is the Mugen Dachi New Tatami Omote the same as Used Tatami?
FAQ’s Yes and No… Both mats are made from the same material, Soft Rush, but that’s where the similarities end. Used mats are… well… used. That means they have been used on the floor, being walked on, for some period of time. Some mats are hardly worn while others are worn almost all the way through from constant use. Because they are flooring the used mats generally contain dirt and other grit that has been ground into the reed fiber. The Mugen Dachi New tatami omote has never been used on the floor so it doesn’t contain any dirt or grit that might dull or scratch your sword. Another benefit of the New Tatami Omote is that you don’t have to worry about checking for staples before you make your targets. Oh yeah… the new mats don’t smell like dirty old feet when you roll your targets and soak them like the used ones do.
