Carphone warehouse don’t sell empty phones, if they did they wouldn’t work :p What you are referring to is the fact that the phones are not locked to a network, so generally will sometimes not have any network related settings on them, such as vodafone live and picture message settings. There are several ways of getting these, either like you did, or phone the network, or go back to cpw or from the network website.
