This is especially true for the Earth Kingdom in Ba Sing Se. In book 3, “Earth,” anywhere you see the Earth Kingdom’s name is written as 土國. The first character means soil and the second character marks a country. So, soil or earth country. Coincidentally, the characters are also used for the country Turkey. The Fire Nation is written as 烈火國, meaning fire country. At the introduction, they use Chinese characters to name all of the elements. No language was made up in the making of this animation. The writers wanted to give this series a degree of authenticity in Asian and Inuit culture. The only thing that is made up is the first answer. P.S. The people on Kyoshi Island refer to their local sea serpent as the “onagi” or ウナギ (unagi) in Japanese.
