The answer to this question is “not yet!” The typical path to gaining ABET accreditation is approximately six years. The goal of Great Basin College and the GBC Land Surveying/Geomatics Advisory Committee is to seek ABET accreditation for the program as soon as possible. It is important to consider the current land surveying/geomatics profession as one in transition. Approximately one third of the states require a four year degree for licensure. The remaining states have some combination of survey coursework and/or an apprenticeship period (experience) for licensure. Many ABET accredited survey programs reside in states that do not require a four year degree for licensure. Many young developing survey programs working toward ABET accreditation serve the needs of states with a four year degree requirement.
