Is the Labour Government airbrushing out their mistakes, u-turns, delivery failures, porky pies etc?
Indeed David Blunkett DID promise mobile phones, pagers and £400 grants to the young jobless back in February 2000. A computer for every child was promised and pilots in Oldham and Suffolk were supposed to start this year, but as the questioner suggests, it doesn’t appear to have actually happened. Petrol vouchers for the rural elderly have been mooted several times since 1975 when we had the first petrol price explosion, but I don’t think it has ever been government policy. So, is Labour being particularly deceitful on these matters? Not really, not when you consider all those new spending announcements the Gordon Brown used to make which turned out to be re-announcements and the endless tide of generous proposals talked about, hyped up, but never made official policy and thus never to see the light of day.
