Irish is more phonetic than English or French, but falls way short of the standards of Spanish or Italian. Mainly this is because Irish has many rules which alter the sound of a letter for positional or grammatical reasons (mutation), and Irish spelling tries to take account of this. So you have words like Maedhbh – which no one could honestly call phonetically correct. But words which are problematic are fairly rare in Irish orthography. If you say exactly what is written on the page people might laugh at you occasionally, but they will understand.
