Is the IRA still active?
“PIRA”, or the “Provisional IRA” (which is the group people outside of Ireland think of when you mention the IRA) isn’t active anymore. A few smaller splinter groups are active on a small scale but, from the point of view of the security services in both Ireland and Britain, aren’t considered to be much of a threat. In fact, of all the paramilitary groups in Ireland, PIRA is the ONLY one that the Irish security services ever viewed as a REAL threat to the stability of the State. The splinter groups were/are simply too small. Obviously they can be a threat on an individual level, as can anyone who wields a weapon of any sort, but, in the grand scheme of things, they don’t have the ability to threaten the authority and power of the State.
