Is the IRA still active?

“PIRA”, or the “Provisional IRA” (which is the group people outside of Ireland think of when you mention the IRA) isn’t active anymore. A few smaller splinter groups are active on a small scale but, from the point of view of the security services in both Ireland and Britain, aren’t considered to be much of a threat. In fact, of all the paramilitary groups in Ireland, PIRA is the ONLY one that the Irish security services ever viewed as a REAL threat to the stability of the State. The splinter groups were/are simply too small. Obviously they can be a threat on an individual level, as can anyone who wields a weapon of any sort, but, in the grand scheme of things, they don’t have the ability to threaten the authority and power of the State. Neither did/do Loyalist paramilitaries: Despite their actions north of the border, their complete lack of support south of the border meant that their only successful attack against Dublin happened when they were assisted by rogue elements of the Britis
