Is the increase in people giving up their pets noticeable?

Yes, there is a noticeable uptick in owners giving up their animals. How will you handle that increase? Well, we just handle it. We definitely see a drop in animals in the wintertime anyway, which is good. So it kind of balances out. We don’t see as many cats, and of course, there’s a definite kitten season in June and October. So without that influx of kittens, we’re having more room for other animals. Do you feel confident about the shelter being able to handle animals in the future? Absolutely. We have a really large rescue group base. We’re really fortunate in San Diego with all of the rescue groups that work with us. Of course, they’re affected by the economy, too, but we couldn’t do it without them. They take a lot of animals out of our kennels. How many are there? There’s about 100 of them. There’s specific breed rescues – everything from Afghan hounds all the way to German shepherd rescues and spaniel rescues. Every breed you can think of pretty much has its own rescue group. T
