Hawk Mountain is a functioning part of the Appalachian ecosystem. Because of this, the trail to North Lookout has been left in its natural state, and as such is characterized by rocky and uneven terrain. There is a slight incline between the trail entrance and the North Lookout which can make the walk difficult for some visitors.
