Is the harp seal population at risk?
The Northwest Atlantic harp seal population is now estimated to be approximately 5.4 million animals, nearly triple what it was in the 1970s. In 2006, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans released a new five-year (2006-2010) management plan for harp seals. The TAC for harp seals will be established on an annual basis. The Provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture supports the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans in ensuring the continuation of a healthy seal population for the future sustainability of the resource.
