Is the “gun registry” scrapped?
A. No. The Firearms Act requires all firearms owners to hold a valid firearms licence and registration certificate for each firearm they have. These requirements have not changed. Bill S-5, tabled in the Senate April 1, 2009, relates to the elimination of the requirement to register non-restricted firearms. If passed, it will not affect the licensing provisions of the Firearms Act. All firearms owners will continue to require a valid firearms licence (POL or PAL). The requirement to register all firearms will not change until such time as the legislation is changed by Parliament.
