Is the greatest British rock & roll guitarist Eric Clapton?
It’s all really a matter of opinion. Eric Clapton is a fantastic blues guitarist, there’s no doubt about that. In my opinion, I believe Jimmy Page is slightly better because he brought the blues influence into Led Zeppelin and became one of the most INFLUENTIAL guitarists/bands in history. So again, it’s all a matter of opinion but I would rank it Jimmy Page #1 and Eric Clapton #2. P.S. John Entwistle played the bass guitar for The Who; their guitarist was Pete Townshend who is also very good! Hope this helps!
Yes. His work spans the entire spectrum of both rock and blues, with a little reggae (I Shot the Sheriff) thrown in for good measure. To really appreciate his breadth, listen to the first three Cream albums, especially “Tales of Brave Ulysses” and “White Room.” Then check out Blind Faith, his solo album with “The Weight,” (I think Delaney and Bonnie are on it) and finally, the solo “Tears in Heaven” from the “Rush” soundtrack. But the Derek and the Dominoes live album where he duets with Duane Allman is also memorable.
Eric Clapton is a great blues guitarist. Jimmy Page is a magician with a riff, master of the 18 string and the bow and also an amazing acoustic player. He has also written a broader base of music in Rock music and is thoroughly unrated as a producer. Eric might have been “God” but Jimmy Page is the Great Creator.
