Is the gay/lesbian community asking for “equal rights” OR ” extra rights”?
Forgive me if I sound offended or defensive. It is so hard to distinguish between emotions when all I have to express myself is words on a page! Before you even assume it, NO, I am not a gay or lesbian citizen. I am a heterosexual female. I have friends who are a part of the gay and lesbian community and I see their struggles. First of all, gays and lesbians are not a “new” group of citizens. They have been around for as long as human beings have been around. They are just not as prosecuted for their attraction to the same sex any more (in some parts of the world) and as a result are not as in the background as they used to be. Second, I don’t think we need to make ANY extra rights to accommodate the gay/lesbian population. They simply need to open up the rights that we, as “straight” people, already enjoy. It is discrimination to exclude gays from the benefit of marriage, just to name one example. That’s equivalent to saying that someone can’t get married because they’re black, or Chi
