Haverstraw official seeks grant probe Hema Easley • JournalNews Following the announcement of a $1.6 million state grant for a controversial kosher chicken slaughterhouse in New Square, Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips is asking the state attorney general to investigate the process by which municipalities are chosen for awards of public money. The town of Haverstraw had also applied for a Restore New York grant in which it sought $2.5 million to remediate the former Letchworth Village property, which the town purchased from the state in 2001. The 18 buildings on the 163 acres of land are lined with asbestos and lead paint.
