Is the full-day kindergarten program mandatory for four- and five-year-olds?
No. The full-day program will remain optional for four- and five-year-olds, as kindergarten has always been. In Ontario, children are required to attend school once they turn six-years-old. Although kindergarten is voluntary, 90 per cent of eligible children are enrolled provincially. I don’t live in the attendance area of a school offering the full-day kindergarten program but I would like my child to attend this program. Can I apply for out-of-attendance-area consideration for my child? If you live within the attendance area of a school offering Full Day Kindergarten (FDK), your child will automatically be eligible to attend. For those families who live outside of the FDK attendance area, there may be a limited number of pupil spaces available in some of our 20 FDK schools. The exact number of spaces will be determined by the end of the second week of September 2011.
