Is the file extension identical with the file type?
No. The extension is the terminal part of the file name, separated by a dot character. The file extension is normally used as a hint for the file type. The true file type, however, refers to the contents of the file, independent of its name. You can rename a text file to have the .jpg extension, which however will not change its contents (and therefore, type) to be an image.
