Is the fact that women helped in the first world war the reason they got to vote ?
I believe it was probably a combination of both. The Suffragette movement laid the basis for getting the vote for women, and after the war effort from women, the government really were backed into a corner to give women the vote. In 1832 the Great Reform Act explicitly excluded women from voting for the first time. Women started Suffrage societies to campaign for their right to vote. Supporters came from all classes, held differing political beliefs and were active across the country. Frustrated by slow progress, the Women’s Social and Political Union formed in 1903 and became increasingly active. Their actions often resulted in arrest. 1,085 women went to prison and hundreds went on hunger strike. When the Conciliation Bill failed in 1911, the WSPU became even more militant in their war to win the vote. Men and women finally got equal voting rights in 1928.
