Is the Epstein Barr Virus Contagious?
The Epstein-Barr virus is contagious when it is in its active phase, yes. It is transmitted through saliva and mucus, and, less effectively, through blood. The Epstein-Barr virus will be active in individuals displaying the symptoms of mononucleosis: lethargy, swollen lymph nodes, excessive mucus production, and mental dullness. After the symptoms have subsided, the virus will go into a dormant stage, remaining as a small clump of cells in the person’s throat for the rest of his or her life. It will not be contagious, but it will always be present. This is important to know because, in a small percentage of people, it may reactivate at some point. The symptoms will return, and the person will be contagious again until the symptoms subside.
