Is the earth really round and not flat?
Even in ancient times, when boats came sailing in to shore, the people on shore would see the tops of the sails first, then the lower parts of the sails, then the boat itself. In other words, the boat looked like it was coming over the top of a hill. This implies the surface of the water is curved like the top of a hill. Similarly, if you travel south, you will see the southernmost constellations rise higher and higher above the horizon into the night sky, until you finally see constellations you couldn’t see before. This means our horizon has become tilted in respect to where we started, implying the Earth is round. If you ever see a lunar eclipse, you can see that the shadow of the Earth that is cast on the moon is circular in shape. That shadow is always circular, no matter where the Moon is in the sky. Only a sphere always casts a circular shadow. When you fly in an airplane, you can sometimes see that the horizon is curved, implying you are flying above a giant sphere. The higher
