Yes, there was a woman named Irena Sendler (Irena Sendlerowa, born in Warsaw on February 15, 1910, died May 12, 2008) who did rescue Jewish children during the German occupation of Poland. Sendler is now best known for her work saving children with the Polish group Zendlerowa, but prior to that she had also been helping Polish Jews by creating over 3,000 false documents on their behalf.
