Is the DVLA a good organisation to work for?
On the whole, yes. I joined the DVLA about 8 months ago and am having a very pleasant time working there. All the pay is standardised, so no arguments there, and all my colleagues have negotiated shift patterns that suit their personal lifestyles. There also enough depatments that people can move around till they find somewhere worth settling into. I think this flexibility makes it a top choice for many students and people with families to support. The only gripes I have are about the opportunities for promotion. Basically, there are opportunities but if you want to go far you have to lie and cheat your way through the promotion boards. There is no fast-track system for motivated people, and a manager’s recommendation means diddly squat. This is because, like many large organizations, promotions are decided by an HR Department who a) don’t know who you are and b) don’t know how to find out. So, OK the DVLA is not always promoting the best people, but in the end it is such a juggernaut
