Is the Director of Studies also a Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory?
(this means s/he is in a better position to know what is going on in the University and what changes are in the wind; it also means that s/he has potentially got access to a bigger pool of supervisors than one who is outside the Laboratory). Neither factor will have much influence on whether or not you personally get on with your Director of Studies and they shouldn’t stop you applying to a College which is attractive for all sorts of other reasons.
