Is the diamond and jewellery industry nascent in implementing web-enabled systems to boost efficiencies?
The sector is highly labour intensive with skilled manpower but with very little computer literacy. A large number of companies do not have any significant level of computerisation. But it is a big industry in India for export generation. There are 10,000 diamond cutting and polishing companies and exports are estimated at Rs 30,000 crore a year. Since the sector is growing at a brisk pace, do you see any need to change processes that have worked for the industry? What are the areas within that can leverage information technology? The jewellery sector has to plan the manufacturing process as it is seasonal in demand. Besides, it has to monitor productivity in each level of skill. There are complex designs which have to be customer-led. There is a challenge to monitor the movement of the raw material and manage the financials. There is big potential in the segment.
