Is the Death Penalty the answer to Prison Overcrowding?
Prisons are overcrowded because we lock people up for minor offenses. The death penalty is not the answer. Jonathan Swift once wrote and essay , satirical, called “A Modest Proposal” about dealing with overpopulation and inadequate food supplies by eating our children. Your suggestion reminds me of that essay.
It may be. But the biggest issue is the misdemeanours which are now on the list of crimes worthy of incarceration. Society’s problem is that it needs to face up to the lack of discipline among the young, and to reverse the damaging trend caused by the wave of political correctness which still pervades our lives like a malignant cancer. Of course we can kill all rapists and murderers, and reduce overcrowding, but until we address some of the more basic situation endemic in society as a whole, all we are likely to get is another criminal taking the empty place.
The answer to prison “overcrowding” is to somehow get rid of the liberal bleeding heart judges and ivory tower politicians who worry that the poor, misunderstood, ‘victims of society’ who commit crimes won’t be all comfy and cozy in prison. Fer Chrisakes, prison’s not SUPPOSED to be pleasant. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.
