Is the current immigration issue causing a “witch hunt” mentality?

The immigration issue arouses passions on many sides whenever it makes front page news. I have my opinion as I work with immigrants to help them gain citizenship that everyone deserves the full benefit of the laws of the United States to allow them to stay here and be productive members of society. I think part of the problem is that people associate “immigrant” with “illegal” and possibly then see that as a threat to them. Nearly all of the illegal immigrants I’ve worked with just want to be here to work for a while and many of them want to go back eventually. If they break the law they get deported. If a citizen breaks the law they don’t get deported. Studies have shown that crime does not go up when immigrants come in, but people like to think otherwise. They are scared of things they don’t know, with people speaking another language sometimes, and customs that are different from their own.
