Well, for the sake of clarifying my above comment (since mUrielw’s post may motivate someone to downmod me more accurately), I’ll simply say that I was looking for a pithy way to sum up an ideological ploy that is a favorite in international politics. If I’d not wanted to be brief, I would have said something along the lines of: Obviously the crimes of communist Cuba, whatever they may be, cannot compare geographically or in terms of scale to what the Soviet Union carried out under Stalin. However, the purpose of calling Cuba Stalinist is not to accurately describe it, but to reach a certain policy goal (in this case, rallying support for the Cuban opposition) by associating the Cuban state with the atrocities of Stalin. So where in Cuban history will you find the mass purges, rapid industrialization, and annexation of the Baltic lands and the Kuril Islands that Lothar rhetorically mentioned?
