Is the cross Pagan?
Well, the actual crucifix would have been shaped like a “T”, so the cross is something other than a symbol of the Crucifixion. They could not use the T, though, since it was already a sign for the death and resurrection of Dionysus/Bacchus, the god of wine. I think if this when I see the vines in their dormancy, their little T shaped forms hanging on their lines as they have for over 10,000 years. The god of wine was celebrated since the earliest ages of agriculture – there is evidence some of the first items mankind began to cultivate were grape vines. The wine god was a cyclical agricultural god – he died at the end of the season, but was reborn each spring and the communion we celebrate now is based on the services for the wine god.
