Is the combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) contraindicated in women with sickle cell disease?
No. Sickle cell disease is considered a relative contraindication. The possible but unconfirmed worsening of thrombosis in women with sickle cell disease who use combined OCPs should be weighed against the risk that pregnancy poses to women with sickle cell disease. If other options of birth control are not acceptable the combined OCP can be used. Women with sickle cell trait, however may use the combined OCP.
