Is the combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) contraindicated in adolescents who have never been sexually active?
No. The oral contraceptive is very effective for control of irregular cycles and dysmenorrhoea. There is no evidence that the estrogen in current low-dose oral contraceptives has an adverse effect on growth or development. Depending on the age and maturity of the teen an educational pelvic examination may be appropriate however, a pelvic exam and PAP smear are not required in a healthy woman who has never had sexual intercourse and who elects to use the combined OCP for non-contraceptive reasons.
