Is the combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) contraindicated in a woman with hyperlipidaemia?
No, if a woman is at high risk for pregnancy and also suffers from hyperlipidemia (with the exception of known hypertriglyceridemia) a third generation combined OCP may be considered. Third generation combined OCPs may, in fact, improve the lipoprotein profile (HDL and LDL cholesterol levels), and decrease the risk of myocardial infarction as compared to second-generation progestins.
