Is the cetane number increased using DFT #1500 “Hammerdown”?
Increases of the cetane number indicate a shortening of the time required for ignition to begin in the combustion chamber. Typical cetane enhancers for diesel fuels, such as amyl nitrate, are high volatility products that shorten the ignition delay but do nothing to ensure full conversion of all of the fuel into heat energy. This type of product will cause high pressure peaking and its attendant problems. DFT #1500 “Hammerdown” does not contain any cetane enhancers. However, its action is such that ignition and burn characteristics of fuels containing DFT #1500 “Hammerdown” are similar to those of fuels with higher cetane numbers, but without high pressure peaks.
