Actually, from what I read the actual origin of the Celtic cross is kind of all over the place. Many claim that it is pre Christian and a symbol of the sun and/or moon. And that St. Patrick found it and added the cross part to it. Others likely claim that the entire design, including the cross is pre- Christian. I’ve even read that some claim that it is a phallic symbol that had a cross glommed onto it to make it “non-offensive”. Fact is there are an awful lot of symbols from a lot of different cultures and religions that have “cross pollinated” all over the place. For instance Pagans claim the triquetra (that symbol from the TV show Charmed-and of course I know it was around long before that show, in fact long before Wicca) as a symbol of the Goddess or of protection. But, it was used in the very early Christian church as a symbol of three fish joined at the tail, and/or a symbol of the trinity.
