Is the cat litter box trained?
Cats who have never used the litter box consistently may not be litter box trained. Is it the litter? Cats may not like certain litters. For example, odor-control litter may smell good to a person, but a cat may not appreciate it. A change in the brand or type of litter, or a change in the box type (covered or uncovered) can be a factor that starts an elimination problem. Cats with suspected “litter aversion” might show some of the following behaviors: • Crying • Perching on the edge of the litter box • Minimal digging and covering (if any) • Shaking movements of the paws after leaving the box • Running to exit the litter box What to do if you suspect dislike of the litter: You can provide your cat with a “litter box cafeteria” consisting of a many litter boxes each filled with a different type of litter.
