IS THE CASPIAN HORSE A SEASONAL BREEDER?
Dordari, Shahram1, Mirian, Jalal, 1 ABSTRACT- The Caspian horse is an ancient breed of small horse,recently rediscovered in northern Iran,on the southern shores of the Caspian sea.In this study,reproductive activity in the Caspian mares during a two year period was assessd by daily teesing and ultra sonographic evaluation.20 Caspian mares,4 to 14 years of age,were kept in a natural environment near Tehran(44″51’N-39″55’E).The reproductive activity in the first year started from the early spring,continued in the winter and terminated in late winter(mid of March).In the second year,the mentioned activity existed from spring to winter and finished in the late February.The maximum activity in the first year was during July to September and in the second year in June to October.The lenght of oestrus cycle and the lenght of Oestrus itself were 22.4+-0.75 and 8.5+-0.9 days respectively.The results show that the Caspian horse has not seasonal polyestrus and its activity is not basically regula
