Is the California Mastitis Test (CMT) reliable at detecting subclincial infections in fresh-cow milk?
Yes. Researchers at Kansas State University and the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, tested CMT sensitivity in identifying infected quarters at calving. Their studies confirmed that at three days post-calving, 73.5 percent of the major mastitis pathogens could be detected with the CMT. So this test is useful in identifying subclinical infections in early lactation.
