Is the calibration of the Gamma Probe important?
Yes, the calibration is very important. Even though the surgeon may not be intimately familiar with this technology, many centers do not have on site personnel that routinely service the probe. It is the responsibility of the surgeon to make sure by whatever means that the probe is properly calibrated. It is best not to perform this on the day of surgery. At a minimum, the probe should be calibrated every 6 months to maintain its accuracy. Contact your probe representative for specifics.
