Is the calcium in supplements and fortified soy products derived from animal bones?
Q Hi Dave. I was just wondering if you could tell me if all calcium supplements and the ones they put in soy products are made from plant based calcium or animal bones. I am new to this and read that calcium comes from ground up animal bones. If that’s true does that mean that all our calcium supplements are? Thanks heaps. A The calcium that is usually added to soymilk is Calcium Carbonate or Calcium Phosphate. These are both minerals, so they are not actually derived from plants or animals they are mined from the ground. They are therefore suitable for vegetarians and vegans. I am not aware of any other soy products that are fortified with calcium. In regard to Calcium Supplements, some of these may be derived from animal products (e.g. cow’s milk) but this is not necessarily the case. You would need to confirm this with the manufacturer of the particular product. Unfortunately there is no other way of knowing and most product labels do not state what the source is.
