Is the Brother XL 2600 a good sewing machine?

I really strongly feel most beginners are better off with a machine from a sewing machine dealer rather than one of the big box stores. Many, many of the questions we get here are from people who haven’t learned the basics of machine operation — which is the big service you get from a dealer. Personally, I’ve never found a Brother I wanted to sew on for more than a couple of seams. I’d probably send you towards something like the Janome Magnolia series or their school machine for good and not overpriced. Please go try some machines… in the process, you’ll learn a lot.
