Operation Baraborossa was the codename for the German invasion of Russia (Soviet Union), on June 22, 1941. Hitler opened a second front to his European war. He had been at war with Britain and France since 1939. The invasion of Russia was part of Hitler’s plan, laid out in Mein Kampf, for Germany to gain new territory and resources, called Lebensraum (living space). Today some nations expand their borders and call it “Natural growth”. The Battle of Stalingrad (today the city is called Volgograd), which took place between 17 July 1942 and 2 February 1943 between the forces of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It was the bloodiest battle in the history of modern warfare, with over two million dead. The German forces, after the execution of “Operation Barbarossa” moved deep into Russian territory.
