Is the Asian Carp the Biggest Threat to the U.S. Economy?
Environmental officials in Illinois are mounting a desperate last stand against the ugly, hulking invader known as Asian Carp in the hopes of preventing the invasive species from entering Lake Michigan, and ultimately the entire Great Lakes system. The ugly beast of a fish can weigh up to 100lbs. and devour 40 percent of its body weight. Wildlife experts fear that if the Asian carp enters the Great Lakes it will devastate the marine ecosystem — and the $7 billion-per-year fishing industry. However the economic impact could be far worse, the Times of London reports: It gets worse: the only way to stop the killer carp, say environmentalists, is to close down the locks that connect the Mississippi to the Great Lakes — a move that could devastate the shipping industry and push up prices of iron ore, coal, grain and other goods.
