Is the aronia berry the healthiest fruit in the world?
That’s what M&S reckon and, in an effort to get us all eating them, will be introducing them to the British high street for the very first time next Monday. With three times the level of antioxidants as blueberries and higher levels of these cancer-fighting nutrients than raspberries and even goji berries, a six-year plan was necessary to successfully grow the plants on these shores, which are native to North America. Grown by Thomas Thomson in Perthshire, Scotland, tubs will retail at M&S for £1.99 per 220g. ‘We are proud to bring one of the healthiest berries to the high street,’ says M&S berry specialist, Emmett Lunny. However, before you rush out to grab a punnet, make sure you have a recipe to hand; too sharp to be eaten raw, they’re best served in a sauce, smoothie or as a cheesecake topping.
