Is the Archives full, and not accepting hard copy records?

A common rumor, but not a true one! The Records Center has limited space, and rarely accepts records that are scheduled for destruction after a long (20 years or more) total retention period. That’s because it is more cost effective for long-term but non-permanent records to be converted to microfilm, or scanned if there’s a business case for doing so, instead of keeping them in paper format. We regularly accept short-term paper records that are infrequently referenced, though; and the Division of Archives Services continues to accept permanently valuable records. The Secretary of State and the State Archivist are both seeking additional storage space for permanent records.
