Is the amount of liquid soap dispensed in 1 pump a measured amount to wash hands properly?
You really need very little soap unless your hands are very greasy. The soap’s job is basically to lift the particles of dirt and grease and help them rinse away – but the mechanical action of washing and rinsing is the most important part of hand washing. The soap is simply an aid. Soap companies design their pumps for customer satisfaction – which is based less on cleansing and more on the way it looks and feels on their hands, the amount of lovely lather produced, the scent that is released and other more esoteric attributes. They don’t do clinical studies to ensure clean hands (unless it’s antibacterial soap, and even then the studies are suspect) – they simply have people try them and collect their responses. Also they WANT you to use the soap up faster so there is a balance between getting the consumer to use as much as possible and the consumer’s perception of the value of the product (if it gets used up too fast they might say it’s too expensive). Half a pump will do just fine.
