The ADA has been an equalizing force in bringing disabled people into productive lives. These people would otherwise be dependent on the government for their lives by recieving disability, being institutionalized and depending on Medicare/aid. Instead a huge number of disabled individuals are productive taxpaying citizens with private (corporation provided) healthcare benefits. There are aspects of the law that have been abused. Some very useless requirements have been placed on businesses in the name of ADA. The ADA also served as a springboard for a host of education law that has benefited untold numbers of children. An average of 10% of school age children have been identified with disabilities. Some of these are the “invisible” disabilities such as learning disabilities that impair reading. You can’t look at a person and say oh you are dyslexic. You can visually identify a child with cerebral palsy or Down’s syndrome. In all of these cases it was the adaptation of the ADA to the ed
