Is the Amen Fugue part of Mozarts Lacrimosa?
Mozart left a brief sketch for an amen fugue in the appropriate key, and there is strong musicological evidence that it was intended for the requiem–written at the same time, same paper, etc. Also, all of the other major sections of the requiem end with a fugue–a common formal convention–so one would also be expected here at the end of the sequence. At least two composers who have produced alternate completions to the Sussmayr version have included completed versions of the amen fugue sketch. The lacrimosa/fugue is the only movement Mozart worked on that is not sketched through to the end, so it certainly leaves the possibility open (the other movements Mozart worked on are complete with vocal parts and bass lines, only details of orchestration needed to be completed–plus a couple of movements he didn’t start at all were added).
