Collingwood president Eddie McGuire led the charge for Richards to become an AFL Legend for his 250 games from 1941-55 – including a premiership as captain – coupled with his 50 years in the football media. Bartlett and other members of the Hall of Fame committee, including the Herald Sun’s Mike Sheahan, rejected the AFL’s direction that Richards be made a Legend. The number of Legends will remain a maximum of 10 per cent of the total number of Hall of Fame inductees. The AFL yesterday also confirmed that character would remain a key criteria for Hall of Fame selection, ensuring continuing controversy over Wayne Carey’s claims.
